Outputing references from SCOPUS
Good news! The MRC is going to fund SCOPUS as a further choice of bibliographic database for all units.
Now that it is certain that we will be retaining access I've been looking more closely at the interface and found that the outputing of references has been modified recently. The series of buttons called EXPORT, EMAIL and PRINT have been replaced with a single OUTPUT button which opens an output screen.
This screen is divided into two areas - the top one gives the output modes:
- Export - this is the default setting
- Bibliography
The bottom area of screen changes depending on the output mode selected.
One big improvement is an extended range of output formats for exported, printed or emailed records; you can now select from:
- Citation
- Abstract
- Abstract and cited references
- Complete record
- Specify fields - a list of fields with checkboxes which you tick to select.
When you select one of these output formats from the dropdown list - a list of the included fields appears at the bottom of the screen.
Now lets look briefly at each of the output modes:
Export - used to send references to EndNote or Reference Manager
Select RIS format as the export format, and choose an output format, before clicking the EXPORT button. This will open a file dialog box.
If you select Save it will save a ris file which you can import using the RIS import filter in your bibliographic management software.
If you select Open it will automatically send the records to your bibliographic management software - it will prompt you to indicate your software if the computer has more than one available and to open the library/database where the records are to be placed.
Choose your prefered output format and click the PRINT button. You'll be prompted to select the printer to use.
This opens an email form for you to complete before clicking the EMAIL button. Again you can choose the output format - this is right at bottom of the form - be prepared to scroll down if necessary. The additional selection that you have to make here is whether to send a plain text email or an html one.
Bibliography
Creates a quick bibliography on the spot. You can select citation format from a list of 9 standard ones and choose whether the resulting bibliography is Word, RTF, HTML or text document. I would not advise using text as it looses all the formating. When you click the CREATE button, a new pop-up browser window opens containing the formated references which you can either Print, Save or Email.
