News from the Royal Society's Library and Archives

As the library has a role in preserving the Institute's history as well as providing up-to-the-minute science information, we're always looking for web resources to use - this one came to light as a result of a Google search for something entirely different, the joy of serendipity.

The Royal Society's Library and Archives have a rather nice News page, where each month they highlight items from their collections including:
  • Archive of the month - August entry: the creation of a science time capsule for 2057
  • Fellow of the month - August entry: James Chadwick FRS (linked to the 75th anniversary celebrations of his discovery of neutrons)
  • Picture of the month - Drawing of an Australian Cuttlefish by Sir Frederick McCoy FRS
  • Book of the month - Lucretius "De rerum natura" looking at his early atomic theory of matter

You can see what has been covered in the past by browsing the New Archive. In the news archive I found two entries on archives which are related to NIMR: The Henry Dale Papers and the Sir John Henry Gaddum Papers . The entries are quite short, but do sometimes include search tips the Society's catalogues.

Nature slips further from pole position

Nature, for long the top dog of scientific journals, has slipped down the ratings as judged by impact factor Richard Gallagher reports in his blog at The Scientist.

In 2004 it was the top journal with an impact factor of 31.9, then slipped marginally behind Science and Cell in 2005. But the latest figures, for 2006, show a further slip: Science comes in at 30.0, Cell at 29.2 and Nature at 26.7.

The numbers are calculated as the total number of citations in the year 2006 to papers published in the years 2004 and 2005, divided by the number of papers published in 2004 and 2005. That's three-and-a-half fewer citations on average for a Nature paper versus a Science paper.

The usual government health warning about impact factors applies: if they tell you what you already know then they're probably correct; if they contradict what you expect then feel free to ignore them.

Expect to see more review articles in Nature in the next couple of years - review articles attract disproportionately higher numbers of citation than research articles so they are a simple way to bump up a journal's impact factor.

Molecular biology archives

The National Library of Medicine, a constituent institute of the National Institutes of Health, announces the release of an extensive selection from the papers of Sol Spiegelman (1914-1983), a pioneering molecular biologist whose discoveries helped reveal the mechanisms of gene action and laid the foundations of recombinant DNA technology, on the Profiles in Science website.

In a separate development, the notebooks used by Fred Sanger, Britain's most decorated scientist, to record experiments that won him two Nobel prizes have been saved for the nation, reports the Observer on 5th August . The Wellcome Trust has stepped in to take possession of the books in which Sanger noted down the progress of research that led to his winning a chemistry Nobel prize in 1958 and a second in 1980, a chemistry double that has never been matched. 'Sanger was the father of genome sequencing,' said Clare Matterson of the Wellcome Trust. 'With his notebooks, we now have a clear record of his influences and thought processes. It would have been tragic if these notebooks had ended up outside Britain.'

The Hippocampus book

I can never see the point of book reviews that don't tell you
  1. whether the book is worth reading/buying
  2. anything about what the book contains
Luckily the latest oeuvre* from Tim Bliss (late of NIMR's Division of Neurophysiology) has been well-served with two glowing reviews, one today in Science and another in May's Nature Neuroscience.

The review in Science said:
"...with a gestation period of 20 years, written by a team of 23 researchers, styled by 5 editors, weighing nearly 6 pounds, and running over 850 pages [the book] summarizes 50 years of anatomical, physiological, and behavioral research on the sea horse-shaped structure buried deep within the brain's medial temporal lobe. It is, however, much more than a reference work. The book also captures the lore of the field and will serve as a reliable guide for the next generation of hippocampologists."
The reviewer goes on to describe the various chapters, in enthusiastic tones. He ends:
The hippocampus has served as a Rosetta stone, and deciphering its secrets is helping us to understand many core principles of brain function. The Hippocampus Book records the impressive results of our decoding to date and passes the torch to the next generation.

The Nature Neuroscience review was rather more poetic and less enumerative, but leaves us in no doubt about his view of the worth of the book:
"this most magnificent compilation ever written about the the hippocampus in the brain ... serves as a precise guide to hippocampal discoveries, and hence we can forget about PubMed: here we have almost all of the important information about the hippocampus, in context".
Although I can't imagine ever "forgetting about PubMed" I see what he means.

He closes his review thus:
The elusive sea dragon of the brain is guarding its secrets tightly, leaving future researchers plenty to study and discover.

Elsevier's prices - 2008

Frank Vrancken Peeters, Global Sales Director for Elsevier, recently sent out a message to customers. It contains the usual soft soap about how "Elsevier is committed to delivering value for customers by continually improving our customer service and product functionality in addition to supporting ongoing growth in the number of articles published and rapidly expanding online usage", and the fact that "in our most recent survey, customers ranked Elsevier higher than other publishers in 8 out of 10 categories, an improvement over last year".

We then learn that
"For decades, the number of research articles published each year has grown by around 3-4% annually. Last year was no exception and in fact, growth of
Elsevier-published articles increased above this long-term rate. Online
usage of Elsevier-published articles on ScienceDirect continues to increase
by more than 20%: ScienceDirect recently passed the milestone of 1 billion
articles downloaded".

and that

"Downloads onto the desktops of over 16 million researchers, clinicians, and students around the globe now continue at a rate exceeding on average over 700 articles per minute, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week."

Finally we get to the news we were looking for:

"Elsevier is targeting a price increase of just below six percent on average across our journals in 2008. ... Elsevier's price increase has placed us in the lowest quartile of the industry for the past six years, and we hope that this year's increase will enable us to remain in this range. As a point of reference, the 2007 average increase across all STM publishers was 7.89% in Europe and 8.73% in the U.S."

More customer-speak follows, to make us feel loved and valued.

New websites from Nature

Nature are launching new websites right left and centre at the moment. They have just announced two new services:

Nature Precedings is for the things in life that come before, or support, the published paper. You’re encouraged to upload and view slides, posters, white papers, unpublished manuscripts and other such material. Users can download the documents, vote and comment on them. As the site is brand new, they’re looking for early adopters and to upload files and test out the systems – so have a go. The idea of this new site is discussed in a news item in The Scientist.

Scintilla is a website you can customize to display the latest content from your favorite news sources, science blogs, journals, podcasts and the various other media that make up the increasingly diverse ecology of scientific information. You can rate, recommend and find similar items.

Online tuberculosis textbook

Tuberculosis 2007 is a medical textbook that provides a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of research, diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis. The 687 page work is available free electronically as a single PDF or a series of PDF files.

The preface says:
Tuberculosis 2007 is the result of a joint effort in response to the Amedeo Challenge to write and publish a medical textbook on tuberculosis. This non-profit-making initiative is particularly attractive due to several reasons. First, the medium chosen for dissemination: the book will be readily available on the internet and access will be free to anyone. Second, its advantage over books published via traditional media is the ease to update the information on a regular basis. Third, with the exception of Spanish and Portuguese, no copyright is allocated and the translation of Tuberculosis 2007 to all other languages is highly encouraged.

Word 2007 causes problems for journal submissions

Both Science and Nature have recently updated their publication guidelines and note that native Microsoft Office 2007 file format documents will not be accepted for initial review or revision. While users can obviously save documents in the legacy versions, the Science instructions for authors go on to state that the equation editor supplied with Word 2007 causes them problems too.

See ZDNet blog posting for further information.

Patents are useful in biology

A letter in the current Nature highlights the utility of patents as sources of information for biologists.

Thanks to the strict enablement requirements of patent law and patent offices in relation to inventions, one can often find more detailed methodology in patent documents than in journals with severe page limits.

A very good example of comprehensive detail in certain non-embryonic stem-cell methodologies is a PCT application WO/2006/028723 (Non-Embryonic Totipotent Blastomer-Like Stem Cells and Methods Therefor), which includes surgical procedures in organ removal, isolation of cells, and composition and preparation of culture media. In this instance, the level of detail and volume of text relating to methodology far exceeds that which many peer-reviewed journals can accommodate.

Chemical structure and gene ontology information in RSS

RSS feeds from Royal Society of Chemistry journals will also display ontology terms and compound details, including the 2D image. Users will be able to see at a glance whether the paper is relevant to their research. In addition, hidden coding within the RSS feed allows the metadata to be read by machine.

This is a part of the RSC's Project Prospect - aimed at enhancing the chemical and biochemical information available in RSC journal articles.
