PubMed retrieval glitches - Fixed

Update Tues 19th December - the problem is fixed.

Original post: Today (sic 18th Dec) we have noticed frequent glitches when we try to access records at PubMed. When you have done a search and want either to view more details or change the view for records, then the following error message is appearing:
"id: ######## Error occurred: Document retrieval error: document does not exist".

The id number is unique to each entry in PubMed so in place of ######## there will be an eight digit number.

The library has reported problem to PubMed.

EMBO journals turn hybrid

EMBO have announced that their two journals, EMBO Journal and EMBO Reports are to become hybrid OA journals from 1 Jan 2007. In other words, they will accept open-access articles subject to payment of a publication fee. The open-access option will be available to all authors submitting original research on or after 1 January 2007. The publication fee will be €2,000 plus VAT (where applicable). Articles published with a publication fee will be clearly identified in the online and print editions of the journal with an open-access icon.

Electronic journals list - don't be confused

In our list of ejournals available at NIMR some journals are listed more than once. This is because they are available online from multiple sources and we felt it important to include links to both sites. The most common reason this occurs is journals that are included in the PubMedCentral archive (PMC). Back issues of these journals have been digitised all the way back to the start of the journal and are freely available at PMC. However, PMC does not include the most recent issues as there is a 6 or 12 month embargo. Subscribers can access current issues at the publisher's website so we also have an entry for that when we have a subscription.

Impact factors

Blackwell publishing's newsletter for librarians has a nice article on Impact Factors summarising some of the biases inherent in their construction.

The strength of the Impact Factor is in the simplicity of its construction... However, this simplicity in construction belies a hidden complexity in its use and interpretation.

Christmas 2006/New Year 2007

The library will be running a reduced service from Friday 22nd Dec 2006 until Tues 2nd January 2007.

• No new journals will be displayed after Fri 22nd Dec 2006 until Mon 8th Jan 2006
• Only one or two Library staff will be on duty to assist users on 28th-29th Dec
• Access to electronic resources should be available but there will be no support or trouble-shooting from the suppliers if problems arise
• Trouble-shooting for problems with printers and copiers will be limited
• Items needed from the Library store may take longer than usual to retrieve
• Items needed on Inter-Library Loan will take longer - many libraries will not send out materials over Christmastide (15th December - 2nd January), the post is also less reliable

In short do not count on the usual speedy delivery of information being available over the Christmas/New Year Break

E-Journals from Highwire

Broken Links?

The library has received a couple of reports that links to journals hosted on Highwire server are broken, however when we test them they appear OK. The URLS for the ones which are reported as problematic are in the format http://intl.jbc.org rather than http://www.jbc.org .

There are approximately 40 journals in our list where we use the intl link and we are trying to gather evidence as to whether this is just a periodic glitch or a more substantial problem, so if you have a problem please email the library.

We have selected to use the intl link rather than www link as it should be quicker (by up to 50%) for us, as its routed through a special private line. You may experience an initial delay the first time you use one of these addresses while our site's address is recognised.

Annual Reviews

All Annual Review titles have moved from Highwire to a new server. Currently HIghwire is automatically redirected to this new server, but not if you use the ETOC icon. The library will be correcting the links over next few days.
