Royal Society "Exploring our Archives" Blog

One of the joys of doing the news update for a couple of days, while Frank is away at meetings, is the things you come across by serendipity - such as this blog.

The blog is being written by 2 researchers Anna Winterbottom and Jenni Thomas as they explore the Hooke Folio. This is a book of minutes of Royal Society taken by Robert Hooke, during his time as Secretary (1677-1682). The official minutes for the Society at this time seen incomplete, and this Folio is slightly mysterious (see What is the Hooke Folio).

The blog has been in existence since Jan 2007 and many of the posts are linked to anniversaries (Royal Society and slavery - abolition of slavery), current news (hot air? - climate change) and hot science topics (malaria).

The blog can be found at http://www.scienceblogs.org.uk/archives/. You can also sign up to receive new posts or comments as an RSS feed.

Retractions

The Scientist has interesting article on the muddy waters of language used for retractions and expressions of concern about papers. This includes a "Glossary of retractions".

Lancet, Elsevier and the arms trade

The Lancet has a proud tradition as a medical journal of record dating back to 1823. The medical library world was shocked when in 1991 the title was purchased by Elsevier, a major commercial publisher. However, Lancet has continued to thrive under its new owners and has benefitted from its inclusion on Elsevier's very reliable ScienceDirect online journal platform and their investment in digitising all issues back to the very first 1823 issue.

Since 2005 a fresh controversy has been rumbling on and now seems to have come to a head. Elsevier is not just the world's biggest scientific publisher, but also part of a larger commercial group, Reed-Elsevier. In their business publishing arm sits Reed Exhibitions - a leading organiser of business exhibitions and trade shows, including arms trade exhibitions. This sits rather uneasily with Elsevier's medical journal publishing activity.

Back in 2005 The Lancet's editorial board called on Reed-Elsevier "to divest itself of all business interests that threaten human, and especially civilian, health and well-being". This has not happened. As a leading opinion former in the medical world the editors of The Lancet are in an uncomfortable position, as the BMJ noted last week. In today's issue there are three pages of letters protesting this link between medicine and the arms trade, and the editors set out their position.

The issue is also featured in today's Guardian.

E-journals list on the Portal

The new list

The list of ejournals available to NIMR staff is now hosted on the Portal. If you go to the new Ejournals page you will see several ways of finding a journal.

  1. The "Top 20" journals are listed on the page
  2. An alphabetical index is presented at the top, taking you to alphabetical listings
  3. On the righthand side there are links to lists of the top 50, and top 200 titles
  4. On the righthand side there are links to subject listings of journals
  5. Under "Journal help" (top right of the page) there is a link to a popup version of the alphabetical index (a small window that you can leave open on your desktop)
  6. At the bottom of the page is a simple tool to search for words in journal titles (search for a single word or an exact phrase)

The page also has links to more general information about journals at NIMR.

Why the change?

All NIMR journal holdings, both print and electronic, are recorded in Webcat (the Library catalogue), with links to their online versions. We also maintain, separately, a simple alphabetical list of links to online journals. That list started about ten years ago with just a couple of dozen titles, and the method used to maintain it was becoming untenable now it has grown to the present more than 1200 titles, with almost daily updates.

The Portal provides ready-made templates for hosting simple databases and allows the same data to be re-used in various different ways. Using the Portal also allows Library staff to keep the e-journals list up-to-date more effectively.

Use of the Portal has steadily increased during 2006, and all staff have been urged to ensure they have access. Extensive efforts have been made over the last 6 months to ensure that all NIMR staff have proper access to the Portal.

The first iteration of the Portal journals list had some teething troubles but it was quickly amended to make it quicker and more usable. We cannot maintain the old list in addition to the new list, so you should expect that the old list will be removed in due course.

Impact factors

A feature article in this week's BMJ - How impact factors changed medical publishing—and science - examines the history, uses and abuses of the journal impact factor (IF). There are a number of quotes from Eugene Garfield, the creator of the IF, who notes that whilst IFs do have some value
It is the mindless use of citation data and impact factors that gets people
upset

A number of editorials and associated articles in the same issue argue the cases for and against impact factors.

Arguing against them, Gareth Williams' points out that
It is patently absurd to believe that the intrinsic value of a piece of research
is increased just because the editor of a "good" journal takes a shine to it.

Arguing in their favour, Richard Hobbs suggests
rather than just discarding impact factors we should consider solutions to the
problems.

Cell Host and Microbe

Elsevier have started to publish yet another new title in their stable of Cell titles - Cell Host and Microbe. The new title is designed to "capture the emerging excitement as a new era in the study of host-microbe interactions unfolds". It will serve as "a home for studies of broad general interest that inform the interaction of microbes—whether they be bacteria, fungi, parasites, or viruses—with their hosts, which could be vertebrate or invertebrate, unicellular, or multicellular".

For the first three months access is complimentary. We do expect to add it to our list of subs following that period.

Data sharing and web 2.0

A news item in today's Nature 446, 10-11 (1 March 2007) discusses how social networking software (often referred to as Web 2.0 technology) is allowing scientists to share data. Quoting David Lipman, director of the US NCBI, the article says it is ironic that scientists have been slow to adopt social software, given how useful it could be for them. "Scientists are more interested in their careers and grants than using tools that promote better communication and data sharing", Lipman says.
