PubMed Changes Default Display

The PubMed default display which you see when you click on either the authors or the icon to the left of each citation in the summary list of results has changed. The new default display format is called AbstractPlus. This is also the format that will appear immediately if your search produces a single result.

AbstractPlus is an enhanced Abstract view that shows the first five Related Articles for each PubMed citation. The record starts with a title bar containing the journal citation details, below this are two columns: the left-hand column contains authors, first author address, abstract and PMID (PubMed IDentification) number; in the right-hand column are the 5 papers which share the most cited references in common with the viewed paper.

One downside to this new format is an inconsistency in positioning of the links to full-text.

  • The vast majority of links to full-text are appearing as publisher icons in the title bar, at the right hand side next to "Links".
  • A few (where icon appears to be too large for titlebar) are appearing at the bottom of the left-hand column below the PMID. This means that if the abstract is extensive the link may not be visible unless you scroll right to bottom of record.

BIOME becomes Intute: Health and Life Sciences

The Intute service was launched on Thursday 13th July 2006. Intute is the new face of the Resource Discovery Network (RDN), and is a free national service enabling lecturers, researchers and students to discover and access quality Internet resources. Intute exists to advance education and research by promoting the most intelligent use of the Internet.

Intute: Health and Life Sciences replaces the former BIOME service and provides information and tools to help you access the best of the Web in the health and life sciences. The new Intute: Health and Life Sciences service is found at: http://www.intute.ac.uk/healthandlifesciences/

Within Intute: Health and Life Sciences there are 6 subject specific gateways which replace the BIOME ones:

Web of Knowledge Upgrade 16th July

MIMAS are pleased to announce that Thomson Scientific will apply the following 'Q2 Upgrades 2006' on Sunday 16th July 2006, between 3.00pm - 5.00 pm - usual upgrade maintenance time.

No disruption to the service is expected however users *PLEASE NOTE* that you may lose access to any search histories that may not been saved on the server at this time.

Upgrades will include the following:

  • * Revised Search Syntax - In Web of Knowledge (WoK) CrossSearch and applications.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    The implied search operator will be changed from ADJ (adjacency) to AND in WoK CrossSearch and applications. In Title or Topic fields apply AND between user entered terms unless surrounded by quotes. This change supports contemporary (simplified) searching, in line with current search trends.
    NOTE: All saved searches will work as originally entered. If additional sets are added to the saved search, the additional sets will use the new format. The same also applies to alerts. All new saved searches/alerts will take on the new format.
  • Author Finder - for Web of Science (WoS) and Current Contents Connect (CCC)
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    You will be able to distinguish between authors of similar names, helping you to find the author you are looking for faster.
    Author Finder is a quick process that helps you find papers published by a specific author. Enter a last name and first initial, then match the list of results with subject category and institution if known.

  • RSS Feeds - Users can choose to receive search and citation alerts via RSS Feeds.
    ~~~~~~~~~~
    Offers users flexibility in how they receive alerts. Librarians can feed their newsletter or other web information tools with alerts.
