Royal Society hybrid OA trial

The Royal Society has launched a trial of a hybrid open access journal service, allowing free access to selected scientific papers after they are published on the web. The new service offers authors the opportunity to pay a fee to have their paper made Open Access immediately if it is accepted for publication by any Royal Society journal. The first paper to be published under the new service appears on the Royal Society's website today.

The new open access journal service, called EXiS Open Choice, is being tested by the Royal Society to see if it provides a viable way of sustaining the costs of peer review and other aspects of journal production. Authors who choose to pay to make their papers immediately available on the web will be charged a full cost of £300 per A4 page, although the Society will initially be offering a discounted rate of £225 per A4 page to encourage authors to use the service.

The EXiS Open Choice is being offered to authors of papers that are accepted for publication in any of the Royal Society's seven journals.

This hybrid OA option is similar to that offered by PNAS, Springer, CoB, Blackwells and many of OUP's journals.

PLoS increases author fees

PloS has increased its charges for the first time since its inception in 2003. The fees are increasing so that they more closely reflect the cost of running the journals.

Starting July 1, the fees, which are paid by authors to offset production costs, will increase from $1,500 for PLoS's flagship journals (PLoS Biology and PLoS Medicine) to $2,500, and to $2,000 for its other journals.

Book of the month

Knobil and Neill's Physiology of Reproduction, vols 1&2. Third edition 2006.

This 3rd edition is the first new one in ten years. It includes coverage of molecular levels of detail arising from the last decade's explosion of information at this level of organismic organization. Several new chapters have been added on the topic of pregnancy, reflecting the vigorous investigation of this topic during the last decade. The information covered includes both human and experimental animals; basic principles are sought, and information at the organismic and molecular levels are presented. Jimmy Neill, editor-in-chief says “What is different and important about this book is that the molecular detail that has been gathered since the last edition has been woven into an understanding of how organisms and organ systems work. That’s what I hope physiology really means; that you understand a whole organism as well as its organs, its tissues, its cells, and the molecular details underlying that.”

PLoS announce a new kind of journal

The Open Access publisher Public Library of Science (PLoS) have announced plans for a new journal - PLoS ONE. They say it will be a new kind of journal:

PLoS ONE will offer a new approach to the way that scientific research is communicated. Like all revolutions, this will take time, and the launch of PLoS ONE will only be the first step. New features and functionalities will be continually added to PLoS ONE while existing ones will be applied to an ever-increasing body of literature.

XOR operator in Catalogue Power Search

The "Power Search" on the library catalogue allows users to specify which fields of data to search and the operators to use to combine the data.

The boolean, or logical, operators available are AND, OR and NOT which are familiar to most searchers, but also a less familar one XOR, called "Exclusive OR" or "Exclusive Disjunction".

XOR means "Or, but not both".

For those of you who are interested in the mathematical logic behind the scenes there is a good explanatory article in the Wikipedia.

Zetoc RSS Service

Many of the major publishers (a notable exception is Elsevier's ScienceDirect) provide tables of contents of new issues as RSS feeds (more information is available in our previous blog entry). In the past you want to be alerted to new content in a journal that did not have an RSS capability you had to rely on either registering to receive an eTOC (table of contents by email) or running an alert search against one of the bibliographic databases.

Now there is a new RSS service from Zetoc*. The RSS service allows you to subscribe to feeds of tables of contents for individual journals. These include titles published by Elsevier and other publishers who don't currently have their own RSS feeds.

To access the service go to the Zetoc Homepage at http://zetoc.mimas.ac.uk and click on the Zetoc RSS link.

For more information see http://zetoc.mimas.ac.uk/rss.html

*The Zetoc database is built by British Library indexing the tables of contents from 20,000 journals and 16,000 conference proceedings each year.
